( IVP /IVU )

Intravenous pylography or urography


  • what is IVU :
IVU or IVP is an x-ray exam that used for diagnosis of urinary tract problems

  • what is IVU used for :
  1. to know how about renal functions
  2. when the patient suffering from renal conlic 
  3. when the patient suffering from hematoria
  4. in trauma cases 
    

  • exam contraindications :
  1. pregnancy 
  2. allergy from contrast 
  3. renal failure 

  • exam introductions :
  1. laxative and enema should be taken before 6 hours from the exam to clean the bowel from gases 
  2. it's preferred doing creatinine test to have an idea about kidneys functions 
  3. make sure that the patient  has no allergy from contrast by 2 ml intravenous 
   

  • the exam :
take a PUT radiogram
inject about 40 ml from ultravist contrast by intravenous route but slowly 
 


after 5 minute take another radiograph

compress the renal pelvis region by bandage or something and after about 20 minutes take the compression  radiograph 
then take a release radiogram after releasing the renal pelvis region 
after 45 minutes from ingecting  take a cyctoisgram when the bladder is filled with contrast and urine 
take the post micturition  film 
finally it's preferred to take a film erect by the vertical bucky
